ABOUT OUR FOOD

Here at SARAVÁ we strive to create for our customers the most delicious and healthy smoothies and açaí bowls. To achieve this goal we use only natural, organic, high quality ingredients avoiding sugar, dairy and gluten altogether.  All of our recipes also include what are known as “superfoods”.  Superfoods are an emerging category of nutrient rich foods that are considered to be especially beneficial for our health and wellbeing.  

Because not everyone is familiar with the types and qualities of the different superfoods we use, we want to take a moment here to introduce them to you and briefly explain the incredible benefits you are getting while you are enjoying all the delicious items on our menu! 

Below you will find information on all of these ingredients and why our food sets SARAVÁ apart from the norm.  Each superfood listed is followed by its nutritional profile and the specific benefits it offers. Once you learn what is in these powerful foods you will want to make them a part of your daily diet. 

 

OUR SUPERFOOD INGREDIENTS

AÇAÍ (AMAZON)

Pronounced, ah-sigh-ee, these small dark purple berries are found on the Açaí palm which grows in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest.  Açaí has a seed in the center a looks similar to a concord grape. It is extremely low in sugar which is why it needs to be frozen immediately after it is harvested. Without a lot of sugar to preserve it, the berry quickly spoils. Therefore, unless you are in the Amazon, you are very unlikely to run across fresh açaí.  Açaí has a taste that is something like a combination of blueberry and chocolate.

ACEROLA (AMAZON) 

Pronounced Ah-sir-ola, these small cherry-like fruits are the most potent source of vitamin C around! 30x’s more than that found in oranges. They are also a power-house of antioxidants, high in vitamin A and contain an abundance of other vitamins, minerals and polyphenols. 

CACAO (Amazon) 

The fruit and seed of the cacao tree are used to produce both a fruit pulp beverage and a powder. Cacao is different from the cocoa powder found in the baking aisle of the supermarket in that it is raw and unroasted. This means it retains much more of its healthy properties. Mineral rich, cacao is high in calcium, iron and has the most magnesium of all superfoods. Raw cacao has double the antioxidant power as açaí and is high in polyphenols. 

CAMU (Amazon) 

Known as South American cranberries, Camu is extremely high in vitamin C. A single teaspoon of the powder contains 1200% of the RDA of vitamin C.

CHIA (Central America) 

High in fiber and healthy fats, ounce for ounce, chia seeds have 8x’s more omega-3 than salmon. Chia is also high in antioxidants, protein and mineral rich. Chia contains 5x’s more calcium than milk, 3x’s more iron than spinach and 3x’s more antioxidants than blueberries. Chia is great for weight loss & sustainable energy. 

CUPUAÇU (Amazon) 

Pronounced koo-poo-ah-soo, Cupuaçu is from the same family as cacao. The fruit is high in essential vitamins, minerals and full of antioxidants. 

FLAXSEED (United States) 

This superfood is a great source of EFA’s and is overflowing with vitamin E. Flaxseed is also rich in lignans which balance hormone levels & is also super high in fiber. 

GOJI (Himalayas) 

Goji berries, or Wolfberries, are adaptogenic, high in antioxidants, beta-carotene and are balanced macronutrients meaning that they are a balanced blend of protein, fat and carbohydrate. They are also rich in vitamins and contain over 30 minerals. It is not noted in our symbol key, however Goji berries are also a great support for eye health and in fighting Alzheimer’s.

GRAVIOLA (Amazon) 

Pronounced grah-vee-ola, this delicious rainforest fruit is high in vitamin C, other essential vitamins and minerals, powerful antioxidants and full of phytonutrients.

HEMP (Kashmir)

One of the best sources of protein on the planet, hemp seeds contain all 8 essential amino acids and are more alkaline than any other protein source and in this way contribute to reducing the acidity of the body, a major factor in promoting disease. The only other source of protein that is more alkaline would be greens. Hemp is full of essential fatty acids like omega-3 and GLA, gamma-linoleic acid. Hemp is also rich in minerals like iron, magnesium and zinc. 

LUCUMA (Peru) 

Known as the “sweet gold of the Incas”, Lucuma fruit is naturally sweet but low on the glycemic index making it a perfect sweetener. Lucuma contains many nutrients including beta-carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium and protein. Its unique maple-like taste makes it a delicious addition to our smoothies. 

MACA (Peru) 

Maca is the true energy superfood. This powerful adaptogenic balances stress and helps us maintain a sense of equilibrium. Maca is high in a wide spectrum of minerals including: iron, magnesium, iodine, calcium, phosphate, potassium, zinc, selenium and more. Maca is also high in vitamins B1, B2, C and E. Packed with amino acids and plant sterols, Maca is a great support for the adrenals and thyroid. 

MAQUI (Amazon) 

Called “rainforest blueberries”, Maqui berries contain extremely high levels of antioxidants, even more than is found in açaí. Maqui also contains many vitamins and minerals and is especially high in vitamin C. Maqui is a great anti-aging superfood.

WHITE MULBERRIES (Turkey) 

Mulberries are the best natural source for reservatrol, a powerful and rare antioxidant. Mulberries are also a delicious source of fiber and a great way to sweeten smoothies naturally. 

NORTH AMERICAN BERRIES (United States) 

This superfood group includes strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and the rest of the wonderful assortment of berries found in your local health food store. Especially high in vitamins C and A, berries also contain high levels of antioxidants. 

SMOOTHIES vs JUICE

Given the popularity of juices today, we wanted to say a quick word about fresh pressed juices versus superfood smoothies and bowls. Don’t get us wrong, we love fresh juices. They are delicious and incredibly nutrient dense beverages. However, in our humble opinion, there are a couple of factors which make smoothies and bowls a better choice in terms of a quick meal. 

Juicing removes all the plant fiber which allows the sugars in the juice to be released quickly into the bloodstream. This impacts the juice’s ability to promote stable, sustainable energy for the body. Smoothies, on the other hand, retain all the fiber and keep us satisfied and feeling good longer. Juice is also difficult to turn into a meal because protein, fiber and fat may all be missing. A superfood smoothie or açaí bowl is a meal in itself and will keep you satisfied and provide balanced nutrition.
